After her last full length album in 2015 and an EP earlier this year, the lovely and classy Cam has finally released her second LP ‘The Otherside,’ and we’ve got it on repeat.
The 11-track album features some very cool tunes with impressive writers. The title song “The Otherside” was co-written by Avicii, but wasn’t quite completed before his passing. Cam worked to finish the song and it ended up being the title of the album.
“Classic,” an upbeat tune and possibly the most country sounding song on the album, was co-written by Jack Antonoff, and “Changes,” a ballad toward the end of the album, was written by Harry Styles, whom Cam had opened for at the Ryman in 2018. Sam Smith, who Cam has previously toured and written with, wrote the song “Happier For You,” a slightly haunting song about watching someone move on. Other big writers on the album include Lori McKenna, Natalie Hemby, and Hillary Lindsey. We think it’s pretty safe to say that this album is stacked with all-stars.
Other notable songs on the album include the tune “Till There’s Nothing Left,” which was written for Cam’s husband, and “Diane,” the track that’s impossible to listen to without belting it out at the top of your lungs. The harms are incredible and it's sure to get stuck in your head. Every song on this album is different from the last in terms of sound and story. It’s an album that reaches across different genres, including a dance/pop vibe in "The Otherside," to "Changes," that features a simple acoustic guitar through the verses. But the meaningful lyrics and storytelling in each song keep it grounded within Cam's country/folksy roots.
The moving and raw storytelling combined with Cam’s powerful vocals, makes 'The Otherside' an album that's easily relatable. This record reflects Cam’s personal life and where she is in her career, and her desire to share these experiences rings clear. The depth of each song has been clearly thought out and penned in a way that captures the attention of listeners while relaying important messages through song. It might have taken 5 years for a new album from Cam, but it was well worth the wait!
